Hiking on Mountain Elgon- 10 Days

Mount Elgon National park is a National Park that straddles the western border of Kenya and Uganda. Located in the Trans – Nzoia District of Rift Valley Province, it covers an area of 169 square kilometers. It is unique split down the middle by the Kenyan – Ugandan side of the mountain has made it into a wildlife reserve like the Kenyan side of the mountain.



Day 1: Arrival day

On arrival at the airport, you will be warmly welcomed by your driver/guide from Alliance Safari & Travel Ltd, who will then transfer you to Kampala for overnight either at Serena Hotel, common Wealth Country Resort Munyonyo (High end/luxurious accommodation), Grand Imperial Hotel, Royal Capital Palace Hotel ( Medium class accommodation) or Fairway Hotel ( low Budget accommodation).

Day 2:Kampala – Mbale

After breakfast, set off on East – bound road to Mount Elgon via Jinja source or river Nile. Mountain Elgon is 4,321 meters high extinct volcano which in pre-historic time stood taller than Kilimanjaro does to day. It first erupted 24 million years ago. Wild life species such as antelopes, elephants, buffalos, monkeys, birds over 300 species and the spectacular scenery which is the main attraction for hikers.

Overnight at either Mbale Resort hotel or Wash and Wills hotel.

Day 3: Sasa camp (2,300m)

After breakfast, drive to Budadiri Park headquarters to begin 4-5 hours hike walking through slopes of montane and bamboo vegetation on Mount Elgon. Arrive at Sasa camp for relaxation and overnight at Sasa river camp.

Day 4: sasa camp – Mudde cave camp (3,900m)

After breakfast, continue to hiking through the extra ordinary moorland vegetation. At this point the climate and vegetation often changes with altitude until you arrive at the Mudde cave. Overnight at mudde cave camp site.

Day 5: Mudde – Wagagai peak (4,321m)

After breakfast, hike towards wagagai, the highest peak. You will have spectacular views of rare high altitude vegetation and the Jackson summit. Overnight at the Mudde Cave camp site.

Day 6: Hunters cave camp

Have a cup of coffee and ascend towards the caldera and the hot springs, take photos as you have clear view of the Elgonensis. Continue to hunters cave camp for overnight.

Day 7: Hunters cave – tatum cave

Have breakfast and then embark on the hike following the famous Tatum cave which has ancient cave paintings. Overnight at Tatum cave camp site.

Day 8: Tatum – Sipi caves

After breakfast, trek from Tatum cave camp to the park headquarters and later transfer to Sipi falls and take a walk to the caves on the opposite side of the falls. Sipi falls is a beautiful and lovely fall for one to see. Overnight at the Lucam lodge which over looks the falls.

Day 9: Sipi falls – Kampala

After breakfast, visit Mbale town and then leave for Kampala having a stop over at the spectacular Bujjagali falls and the source of the river Nile and Sezibwa falls. Overnight at either Serena Hotel (High end/luxurious accommodation), Grand Imperial Hotel (Medium class accommodation), Fare way Hotel (low Budget accommodation).

Day 10: Departure day
